Sam Harris – Respecting Beliefs

2005, Cultural Studies
Presented By: Sam Harris

Author and philosophy graduate Sam Harris discusses religious moderation and respecting others’ beliefs. Religion can’t be immune to critique, he says, because it is often made up of beliefs that impede progressive discussion. The problem with religious moderation, he says, is that we ignore the conflict and violence advocated for and inherent in religious philosophies. Until it is evaluated and reason is uncovered, spiritual belief remains a fiction. Sam argues that spiritual truths must transcend culture. We must be able to empathize not because of religious commonality but because of human commonality.
