Richard Terrile on Computation Speed

2005, Science & Technology
Presented By: Richard Terrile

Scientist and Astronomer Richard Terrile discusses computation speed and super computers. At this point in time, the laptop can compute information at a speed 7% that of the human brain. But what is the future of computation? By 2020, Richard says, we will have developed a computer faster than the human brain. He and his colleagues draw from nature to develop models of design which include what Richard calls “evolutionary computation”. Richard asks us to consider the implications of such sophisticated artificial intelligence. Could Hal 2000 soon exist?
